On 13 February, international broadcasters and listeners around the world celebrate World Radio Day. Radio still remains a powerful communication tool that reaches the widest audience worldwide and is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people. It has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. This year’s theme for World Radio Day is “Radio in times of Emergency and Disaster”.

Bazlur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer BNNRC - Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication, on the phone from Bangladesh, takes a closer look at the role of radio.

  • A Radio Station's Premature Birth in Texas Flood

    00:00

In the aftermath of the massive Memorial Day weekend flooding that devastated parts of Texas along the Blanco River, there was a need for the transmission of reliable, current information. Local Internet station and Pacifica Affiliate Wimberley Valley (Texas) Radio was gearing up to build an LPFM. Although they planned to go on the air next year, they were allowed by the FCC to temporarily sign on the air on June 5, 2015. Thus, Wimberley Valley Radio went on the air immediately.

They are now broadcasting 24/7 to help those suffering losses from the floods. According to President and Acting General Manager of Wimberley Valley Radio Susan Raybuck, this is what Wimberley Valley Radio was originally conceived for: a low-tech means to convey accurate, up-to-date information to our community.

We hear from Raybuck and Jim Ellinger of Austin Airwaves, as they describe the process of getting themselves on the air in such a short time.

    Featured speakers/guests:
Susan Raybuck, KWVH, Wimberley, TX; Jim Ellinger, Austin Airwaves, Austin, TX; Michael Brown, Brown Broadcast Services, Portland, OR
